As the world becomes increasingly aware of environmental and social issues, more customers are opting for businesses that prioritise sustainability and ethical practices, and buying products that reflect these priorities. In a global consumer survey, more than 71 per cent of respondents reported making modest to significant changes to their consumption behaviours to live more sustainably. While this shift in consumer behaviour presents opportunities for businesses, there is growing scepticism surrounding the credibility of these sustainable products, presenting obstacles in capturing this demand.

In 2023, the Liveability Challenge marks its sixth instalment as the largest sustainability solutions platform in Asia. There will be a grand prize of S$1 million awarded to each winner in two categories: climate change and decarbonisation, and food and nutrition – double that of previous years. Following a six-month journey and beating hundreds of other applicants from over XXX countries, finalists in each category stand a chance to secure the grand prize of up to S$1 million in grant funding for project development by Temasek Foundation and a minimum of S$100,000 investment by PlanetRise, Rumah Group, Quest Ventures, trirec, and PeakBridge.

Amid inflationary pressures, recession fears, rising interest rates and the ongoing war in Ukraine, the global investment picture is bleak. This complicates the net-zero transition for countries in developing Asia. The region’s transition has been estimated to require up to US$37 trillion over the next 3 decades to be aligned with Paris Agreement goals. While ensuring an equitable transition has emerged high on the international agenda in the past year, successful mechanisms remain elusive, especially against the current macroeconomic backdrop.
